Take a walk on the glacier snow and ice atop Whistler Mountain on this guided, 2.5-hour, small-group adventure. Take in the natural landscape sculpted by ice and volcanoes. Outfitted with boots, crampons, and an ice axe, learn how to walk using glacier equipment and take a tour around the Whistler Glacier. Along the way, travel back in time to 10,000 years ago to learn about the formation of the Coast Mountain’s glaciers and have a chance to play on the ice and snow. All the necessary equipment is included.
Take a walk on the snow and ice atop the Whistler glacier. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to observe a 10,000- to 12,000-year-old glacier in retreat. An early summer walk provides the opportunity to slide or glissade down the snow.
Meet at the Mountain Skills Academy and Adventures mountaintop office 15 minutes before the tour's departure. The ride on the Whistler Gondola from the village takes approximately 30 minutes. On the 9am tour, guests will meet their guide at the base of the Gondola at 8:45am at the picnic tables. At the office, meet the guide, sign a waiver, and be outfitted with glacier travel gear.
Next is a walk across either a beautiful alpine snow slope or a breathtaking glacial morraine and wildflower meadow (depending on the time of year and the mountain conditions). While approaching the Whistler bowl and glacier, look up at the bowl to see the 2,160 meter Whistler Peak.
Along the way, learn how the last ice age interacted with the terrain to form the beautiful coast mountain ranges. Take advantage of the world-class photo opportunities of the Pacific Coast mountain ranges.
The tour will conclude with a walk back to the mountaintop office.
As with all activities in the beautiful Canadian Alpine, each day is subject to varying mountain conditions. Ask the staff what the mountain has in store for that particular day. This popular tour is great for people of all ages and abilities, and is especially fun for families with children eight years and up. No experience is necessary.
